Based on the comic book "Here" by Richard McGuire

Synopsis

A generational story about families and the special place they inhabit, sharing love, loss, laughter and life. It was first published as a strip in the comic book magazine "Raw" in 1989 and expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. At one point early in the film, Richard’s father lists several towns that he believes are along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, when in fact they are all towns along Interstate 80 in PA, which had not yet been built. [from trailer] Richard: You know, if you want, you can spend the rest of the night here.

Margaret: I could spend the rest of my life here… Features They Stooge to Conga (1943). 1 and 2 Written by Artie Shaw Performed by Artie Shaw and his Orchestra Courtesy of RCA RecordsBy arrangement with Sony Music Entertainment. With films like Back to the Future, Forest Gump, Cast Away, & The Polar Express, I’m always intrigued by “the next Robert Zemeckis project”.

There’s no doubt that Here is a technical achievement in cinematography from Zemeckis and DP Don Burgess

In Here, the esteemed director once again shows his technical prowess and innovation – if lacking the clear narrative beats his films are usually known for. To put it very simply, Here tells the story of a single plot – shot from one angle – over an extended period of time (dinosaurs to 2020+). It seemingly focuses on the lives and family that Richard (Tom Hanks) & Margaret (Robin Wright) have cultivated in that space over their lifetimes. It seems to break the very rules of cinematography to create anything compelling for a single fixed camera point, but it works well enough to keep the viewer engaged.

“Static” does not equal “boring” by any means

It’s also a return – whether through aging AI or a contemporary look – to the big “everyman” roles that Hanks thrives in. He gives a terrific performance, and his chemistry with Wright has held true over the years. Still, there’s something missing here, and I think it’s, ironically enough, the lack of time in the Hanks/Wright angle. While it would go against the whole concept to completely remove the other character arcs, I found myself not at all invested in the Native Americans, the Revolutionary patriots, or the 1940s inventors building the “backstage” of the house, if you will.

I only really cared about Richard & Margaret (and their orbit) from an emotional angle

. So, despite a few heartfelt/thoughtful moments and some fine technical prowess, Here has its ceiling limited by the needs of the technique. Maybe if the screen went from cradle to grave, things would be different, but a wide shot also means a narrowing of time in any one area (to the film’s overall detriment). From Alien: Romulus to Road House, take a look back at some of our favorite posters from 2024.
