Synopsis

Jackal is an elusive killer who makes a living by completing orders for the highest fee

Soon he meets a worthy rival in the face of a tenacious British scout, who tracks him down in an exciting cat-and-mouse chase across Europe. The novel “Day of the Jackal” was filmed in 1963 and included an attempt on the then president of France, Charles de Gaulle.

The show moves to the modern era

A remake of The Day of the Jackal (1973). Everything goes awry when a young black woman is appointed to the role of an MI6 officer.

I can only assume that the producers wanted some kind of gender/ethnic balance

However, the characters must be believable, and it’s simply incredible that someone at that age can be such an expert on a special weapon. I think it was Forsyth or Higgins who wrote that if you start the story with the seaplane landing on the Thames near Westminster, the reader won’t believe the rest of the story.

It’s a shame, because Redmayne is excellent, but there was no need to update and change the story to such an extent and play it with awakened characters. On that note, the idea that a black female officer has an asset linked to the unionist paramilitary forces in Belfast is so ludicrous that it’s much more than the seaplane moment.
